Description: This Society meeting is a primer for our Society’s beginners. It may sometimes seems daunting to the very novice, but hang in there. Lots of help is all around you. While Moses is the main instructor, Dave B. and Sandy O. have volunteered as an assistant instructors who also sometimes lead lessons. Any one of the 3 may lead this Society meeting They’ll also help those attending this session practice the signature songs using these basic chords. It will start 45 min before any of our main scheduled meetings (e.g. 2nd Sunday NVUS Group Lessons or 4th Sunday NVUS Jams).

Suggested readings:

  • Lesson Package 01: at a minimum
  • Lesson Packages 02 and 03: these basically are the same as 01 but in the keys of F and G, respectively
  • Strums and Rhythms cheat sheets

General Agenda:

  1. Looking to revisit and recap strums and chorded scales at this Primer.

    On strums — we will revisit, straight 4’s, straight 8’s, thump-strums, and chunking. To think of the 4’s and 8’s, think of counting in time – | 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 | and repeating. These are all down strums. The beats between are “and” (“&”) beats — or more correctly 1/8th beats. These are counted: | 1 – & – 2 – & – 3 – & – 4 – & | and repeat. These are down on the numbers, and up on the “&”s. More later.

Those not ready to pursue the chords that can be played to the scale (chorded and harmonized) can continue to play the notes. These are the notes that go: C – D – E – F – G – A – B – C (these equate to / the same as: Do – Re – Mi – Fa – So – La – Ti – Do — see movie Sound of Music where Julie Andrews teaches the kids the basic to music)

Chorded and Harmonized Chorded Scales for the key of C, F, and G can be found in our club’s Lesson Packages 1, 2, and 3, respectively.
